Google, Twitter, Facebook Go Red in Support of World AIDS Day

Feel like you’re seeing red today. If you’re online much, chances are you’re right. In honor of World Aids Day, Google, Twitter and Facebook all ran red themes to varying degrees today. The aim was to support JoinRED, an initiative to raise funds to fight AIDS in Africa.

Twitter’s login page went red with a banner that encouraged member to follow @JoinRED. Entering #red or #laceupsavelives turned your tweets red as well.

Facebook urged its members to become a fan of (RED) and show their support for World Aids Day by sharing a video titled “The Lazarus Effect,” referring to the way AIDS victims in Africa seemingly are resurrected when given a round of antiretroviral drugs, and noting that two pills cost just 40 cents a day. Facebook also encourage member to upload the (RED) logo as their profile pic, and to buy a pair of red Nike shoelaces. Proceeds benefit the Global Fund and soccer-based programs that help fight AIDS in Africa.

And Google’s homepage donned a little red ribbon and a link to its Google.org page, which featured links to multiple AIDS- and other preventable disease-related organizations’ web pages.

One catch: It appears Google’s World Aids Day support is browser-specific. Try as I might to find it, that little red ribbon simply would not appear in Internet Explorer, but did in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
